Aim

To provide an introduction to the design, conduct, analysis and reporting of a randomised controlled trial (RCT)

Learning objectives

  • To explain why RCTs are needed
  • To introduce the principles of RCT design including basic trial design, sample size calculations and statistical analyses
  • To review the practical implications of running a trial
  • To give an overview on how to report and critique an RCT

Target audience

University of Oxford DPhil students, researchers and other staff members working in trial related-roles (e.g. trial co-ordinators) seeking an introduction to RCTs
